The US 20 project will make transportation through Elgin easier and safer for residents, commuters and visitors alike by renewing deteriorating pavement and addressing other roadway hazards.
Due to the condition of the IL 31 bridge, improvements to the US 20/IL 31 interchange have been identified as a “breakout project” that will occur ahead of the remaining work within the US 20 corridor.
The new bridge will include two through lanes in each direction, dedicated left turn lanes, and a multi-use path. Dedicated right turn lanes will also be installed for traffic turning from IL 31 to the US 20 entrance ramps. Safety will be improved by increasing the vertical clearance under the bridge, widening the inside shoulders on US 20, improving traffic operations at the ramp intersections on IL 31, and by improving facilities for people walking and bicycling.
One lane of traffic will remain open in each direction on Illinois 31 for the duration of the construction project and two lanes of traffic will be maintained on US 20 for the majority of the project. The westbound exit from US 20 to IL 31 will be detoured to McLean Boulevard.> Click to view exhibit
